Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy is a world famous street artist whose identity remains unknown to millions of his admirers around the world. His work can be seen on the street corners of Paris, the London Zoo, Israeli West Bank Barrier, LA, NYC, New Orleans, and in some of the most prestigious museums across the world.
Thought to be born in Bristol, England in 1973, “Banksy” was born the son of a photocopier technician who later became obsessed with the underground Bristol aerosol graffiti scene in the 1980’s. Heavily influenced by artists Jef Aerosol, 3D from Massive attack and other members from the anarcho-punk band Crass, which maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System during the late 1970’s, early 1980’s.
Banksy’s work has become some of the most sought after pieces in the world. With a wish of anonymity, Banksy does not sell or market himself or his work directly. Rather leaves this in the hands of Art auctioneers, marketers, and copy cats. In 2010, Banksy was the subject of a street art documentary called, “Exit from the Gift Shop.” This movie was later nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Documentary” and is a must see for those with a passion in art & culture.

Much of his work engages political themes, capitalism, satirically critiquing war, hypocrisy and greed. His distinct stylistic talents combined with his fascinating visual imagery and mysterious persona, makes him one of the most famous living artists in the world today.
Banksy’s identity remains unknown, despite intense investigation. The two names most often suggested are Robin Gunningham and Robert Banks. Pictures surfaced of a man who was supposedly Banksy pointed toward Gunningham, an artist who was born in Bristol in 1973. Gunningham moved to London around 2000, a timeline that correlates with the progression of Banksy’s artwork. However, neither of these names have been confirmed.
Our team salutes Banksy for his dedication, and look forward to showcasing more of his work in the future.
